Playbook / Greenfield vs Brownfield

Greenfield vs Brownfield

Wrong pitch to the wrong stage shows immediately.

Greenfield

A fresh, ground-up centre. The company has no India presence yet, or is deciding whether to build one. Nothing is built: no entity, no office, no team.

  • Buyer question: should we build in India, and how
  • Decision owner: usually a global COO, CFO, or a newly appointed India lead
  • What we lead with: Design and Setup, the engagement model choice
  • Sales cycle: longer, more stakeholders, bigger first decision

Brownfield

An existing centre that's scaling, adding a new capability like AI or R&D, or moving off an outsourced vendor model onto a captive one.

  • Buyer question: how do we run this better, or change what it does
  • Decision owner: usually the existing GCC head or India country manager
  • What we lead with: Operate and Transform, fixing or evolving what exists
  • Sales cycle: shorter, one clear owner, a specific operational pain
Playbook / Greenfield: Signals to Watch

Greenfield Signals to Watch

One signal's enough to start. Two or more, jump the queue.

First India announcement

A press release, earnings call mention, or news article confirming the company is entering India for the first time.

India-specific leadership hire

A newly announced Country Head, India, GCC Head, or Managing Director, India role, often posted on LinkedIn before any public announcement.

Site selection activity

RFPs or consultant engagements for city or micro-market selection, a strong signal the decision is imminent, not exploratory.

Public statements on India

Executive comments in earnings calls or interviews about "exploring," "evaluating," or "considering" an India centre.

Playbook / Brownfield: Signals to Watch

Brownfield Signals to Watch

Change inside an existing centre, not a decision to enter India.

New capability announcement

A press release or news mention that the centre is adding AI, R&D, analytics, or another function it didn't run before.

Vendor-to-captive language

Job postings or LinkedIn posts mentioning "insourcing," "transitioning from an outsourced model," or "building a captive team."

Headcount growth beyond original scope

Hiring volume or role types that go well past what the centre originally launched to do.

Leadership commentary on maturity

A GCC head publicly discussing the centre "evolving," "maturing," or moving "up the value chain."
